Simon Wright Jewellery

We are delighted to welcome Simon Wright back as an official sponsor of the M1, L5 and M7. Right in the heart of London’s lively jewellery scene, Simon creates exquisite custom-made jewellery and engagement rings. He combines conventional craftsmanship with contemporary technology to make magnificent one-of-a-kind pieces.

Simon Wright has been a proud sponsor and passionate member of Wapping Hockey Club for four years. Having picked up a stick as a complete novice he quickly carved out a role for himself as a rock solid right-back for the Men's XIs. We caught up with Simon recently to ask a little more about Simon Wright Jewellery and the season ahead.

How has your Wapping career fared so far?

That's probably something to ask the lads on the team, but I like to think I'm contributing to the defensive line. Rumour has it that last year the XI's were the best defensive team in the club - those cut shots and cover drives are pretty useful when you are defending short corners!....but I reckon my after match game is stronger than my in match game ;-)

What would you say is the high point of your time at the club?

The high point is not at all game related. The club has been welcoming to me, a bloke who only picked up a hockey stick a few years ago, and the players from teams who I have sponsored have all made it clear they appreciate my support.

When did you launch Simon Wright Jewellery and what was the reason behind it?

I set out on my own in 2009, I wanted to offer something that was different from the usual luxury goods market, as it made me uncomfortable being in a straight-laced hard sell environment, it was important to me to offer a relaxed experience.

What’s your background?

I grew up in Melbourne, Australia. I did Jewellery and Metalsmithing at University, then completed a four year apprenticeship and worked in Australia for two years as a jeweller, then I eventually moved to London where I carried on working within the jewellery trade before setting up my own business.

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?

It's a small outfit, there's two of us here. I do all the nuts and bolts designing and making, and Doug looks after the social media and admin support (he eats all the biscuits too, but not if they are Custard Creams).

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?

If I could start over I would have gone into a partnership from the beginning, it was a hell of a lot of work for one person to stay on top of.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?

When a customer recommends me to their friends, it is very humbling to know that someone appreciates your work so much that they want their loved ones to experience it too.

Makers

We’re excited to announce that for the 2022–2023 season, Makers are sponsoring our Women's 1st team. With Wapping’s goal of making hockey accessible, affordable and engaging to fans and players — it’s a perfect match for the kind of organisational values held at Makers, “London’s leading software development boot camp” - Forbes.

Now, you might be thinking, what does coding have to do with hockey? Well, WHC is a secret hub of Makers alumni! Cool right? At Makers we continue to follow alumni journeys long after they leave the bootcamp, engaging with our community through interview catch-ups — and most recently our community festival where so many former students joined us for a fun day in the sun.

Supporting WHC means we can not only engage with our alumni through a different lens but also encourage people from different backgrounds to consider a career in tech. According to a recent study, only 17 per cent of those employed in the technology sector are women.

To build a successful career in tech you also need much more than just technical ability. You need to the resilience and communication skills to thrive and lead. Playing sports can help to build a sense of confidence, combat stress and build real comradery with your peers - all things we encourage in our ethos!
